About Lesvos island:
Lesvos belongs to the
Eastern Aegean Sea islands, occupying 1,630 square Km, with coasts’ length
about 370 Km, and
situated 5-8 miles far away from Asia Minor coasts. It
belongs to the Prefecture of Lesvos, that consists of the islands Lemnos,
Ayios Efstratios and a plethora of uninhabited islets of the area. Lesvos has
been inhabited since prehistoric times, fact proved by the findings of
archaeological excavations, while till our days, small towns’ names with
mythological origin survive like Mytilene, Kalloni, Antissa, Eressos,
Mythimna.
There are two Bays - Kallonis and Geras - and a plethora of
capes and gulfs give a characteristic shape to the island.
There aren’t any
extensive plains, while the highest mountains are Lepetymnos - northern,
height 968m- Olympos -southern, height 967m- and Psilokoudouno - southern,
height 914m-. Also there are torrents like Tsiknias, Tsichliotas, Mylopotamos
etc. Western Lesvos in comparison with the rest of the island is infertile and
rocky with the exception of small green patches, while the rest of the entire
island is full of olive grooves ( 11 million olive trees ), forests of pine
trees, cypresses etc. The climate is mild, with warm summer and mild winter,
and long lasting periods of sunlight all around the year.
The population of Lesvos is about 100,000 inhabitants and
the town of Mytilene is the capital of the island and the Prefecture as well.
Also Mytilene is the administrative center of the Ministry of the Aegean, the
District of Northern Aegean, the Prefecture and the University of Aegean,
while it is divided into thirteen municipalities.
The local economy is based
on agriculture and mainly on olive trees’ cultivation, cattle raising,
fishing and distillery of the famous local drink ouzo. Also many Lesbians are
engaged into tourism enterprises.
Mytilene, the island's
capital:
Mytilene is considered
as one of the most ancient towns of Eastern Aegean. It has been established
- as a town-state - since the beginning of the 10th century BC and
architectural ruins of the Ancient, Classic, Hellenistic, Roman and Medieval
times have been excavated all around the town and mainly to the area limited
by the central Ermou street and Epano Skala’s area.
The modern town
of Mytilene spreads amphitheatrically along the Southeastern coasts of the
island.
It’s a hospitable town that perfectly combines old with modern
elemets. Its inhabitants are distinguished by their friendly and hospitable
manners. The old- northern - harbor, Epano Skala, has been substituted by
the southern one during the beginning of the 20th century. At the sam
e
time the town expanded towards the Northwestern with the establishment of
the refuges’ settlement after the Asia Minor Disaster in 1922 and a little
bit later towards the South, Southwestern.
Old neighborhoods - Sourada,
Kioski- till today keep their aristocratic tint with the restoration of
artistic mansions, built in 19th and 20th century. Mytilene’s harbor
offers all the necessary substructures.
The airport is situated at a
distance of 10Km away from the town’s center, while a secondary commercial
port and a marina are under construction.
There are three main exits
from the town:
• a northern one, that guides to the Northeastern part
of the island, through the area of the old port ( Epano Skala ),
• a
southern one, that leads to the airport and towards the southern edge of
Geras Gulf and
• the eastern one, that through the main road network
guides to the small towns and villages of the entire island.
The orientation
